Port Alberni Shelter Society et al v. Graham Hughes et al., 2021 BCSC 1754

Arden Beddoes and Justin Wiebe acted for the plaintiffs in an action for defamation related to a prolonged defamatory campaign waged over social media. The plaintiffs were awarded damages of more than $340,000, and the court issued permanent and mandatory injunctions requiring the defendants to stop making the defamatory statements, and to remove existing statements from the internet. In explaining the award, the court said that the nature of the defendants’ campaign was “so wrong and so prolonged and so extreme that the court must express condemnation of it”.
